Beyond the Wall of Sleep

Sauk City, Wisconsin: Arkham House, 1943. First Edition. Good. Item #132

Beyond the Wall of Sleep, by H.P. Lovecraft. Collected by August Derleth and Donald Wandrei. Arkham House, Sauk City, Wisconsin. 1943. pp. xxix, 458. $5.00. 1217 copies. A good reading copy without dust jacket. Crush to upper corner of the back cover through about half of the volume. Cloth and gilt stamping faded and with some white marks on the cover. Text block is clean and unmarked. Binding is solid and secure, albeit relaxed. I have used this volume as my personal reading and reference copy. I sell it for the same purpose.
The second Arkham House volume of Lovecraft and published to compliment The Outsider and Others. Where the Outsider finally put the gent’s popular writings into his first posthumous collection, Beyond the Wall of Sleep collected his secondary writings, some of which are printed for the first time. Derleth published this collection shortly after his partner, Donald Wandrei, was drafted into the U. S. Army where he would serve in Europe during WWII and participate in the drive across Germany under General Patton. The war would impact the publication in another way. A paper shortage. Wartime restrictions on paper limited the print run to just over 1,200 copies at a time when Arkham House began to flourish and would have printed many more.
